About communication

Reasons we communicate

We each have a deep need to connect and interact with other people.

That’s why communication is a basic human right.

Communication happens when we:

  • read things people have written on a website or in an email
  • listen to a song or watch a movie
  • video call a friend with Zoom™ or Facetime™™
  • read a textbook for school
  • send a text message to someone on their phone
  • share something funny on TikTok™
  • submit an order for online shopping.

Relationships with other people depend on communication. It is also a key part of learning and participating at home, school and work. With communication, we share our experiences, ideas, needs and feelings, and we make decisions and have some control over our lives.

Communication difficulties can limit or prevent participating in so many everyday activities.

That is why it is important to enable access to communication for each person.
